How To Fix A Lamp Socket

A faulty lamp socket is one of the most common problem people face with their lamps. However, fixing a lamp socket is a very easy task and it can be done in a very short time, if you have all the required hardware. All that you need to get a lamp socket fixed is a standard screwdriver, wire cutters or wire strippers, electrical tape and a new lamp socket. All these tools are easily available at any hardware or electrical mart and they won’t cost you a lot.

Safely unplug the lamp and release the knot in the wire at the base of the lamp.

Remove the shades of your lamp and the harp or the rod your lamp shades rest on.

Remove the socket shell by carefully clipping it out and then pull it off.

Now, before disconnecting the wires from the old lamp socket loosen its screws.

Now, loosen the screws which hold the base in its place and then remove the socket base from the lamp.

You now have to snip of the edge of a wire which goes through the lamp, then strip of less than half an inch of insulation off the end. Now, split approximately two inches of the wire, making it a point that you do not cut through the insulation, so that now you have two ends left just like before.

Carefully, slide the captive ring over the wire before installing the brand new socket.

Now, loosen the screws of the new switch and wrap one end of the wire around it and then tighten it, so the same with the other wire and then wrap both of them using an electrical tape.

Slide the socket shell back into its own place and screw the new socket into the captive ring you slid in before. Now tighten the lock screw so that everything fits perfectly tight.

Plug it into the wall socket and test it. Tie a knot back at the same place where you had released the knot before. Attach the harp back on to the lamp and cover it with the lamp shade to enjoy your newly fixed lamp socket.
